My Sincere Sympathies

Funerals are finite!  The one event that most of us would rather not attend but we must out of compassion and respect for the family of the deceased.

Tomorrow I will be attending the funeral of a lady whom I’ve known since I was a child and she also happens to be my sister’s Mother In Law.

She was a wonderful lady, grandmother, mother and former neighbour.

So many people, who can afford to do so are pre planning their funerals.

Have you done this?

At this time, I have not, but this is something I really need to do.  My older sister has told me that she has already prepaid for her funeral and did so with money left to her.  What a wonderful thing to do with some extra money you happen to receive.

Now I have to admit that there have been several visitations to funeral homes which I have neglected to attend and this is shameful.  I always feel terrible when I do not go but it has happened.

Do you do this too?

The days that I have missed visiting and offering my condolences, I wonder, will my friends and neighbours do the same when I pass away and not bother coming to offer their sympathies to my children?  Many people request that there be no funeral and no visitation.  This happens quite frequently in my town.

Tomorrow I will attend a funeral.  I will offer my sympathies to the family as I should and hope to do better in the future.

    I too have not gone to some visitations for one reason or another. And then…a l little more than twelve years ago, we sadly lost our 26 year old son in a car accident. It broke our hearts…a rainy night, someone lost control and the future changed. What brought us back the possibility of finding joy again were our friends who came to visit…our daughter’s friends who came to hold her hands while being their happy selves and our son’s friends from far and near who came in such large numbers to honor our son. And then we realized the strength of love. That is why we go to visitations. A very good post!

      I am so sorry for you loss! Thank you so much for sharing this. Yes, when my parents passed away it was the love of friends and relatives that gave me strength also. It is so important to go and give this gift of love and we sometimes truly do not realize what an amazing gift it is to those who need it the most. Lots of love to you. 🙂

        Thank you for your comment! Your post really was particularly important to me. You are right… we do not realize the depth of meaning when friends come to a visitation or other gathering! When I lost my parents, I still remember hearing one of my mother’s friends saying to another friend…”Oh look…those are Tricia’s friends from the city! She will be fine because she has such wonderful friends!”. And I was eventually fine because that “overheard” comment was exactly something my mother would have said!

    Thought provoking !!!!! As is life so is death, each one of us will someday have to leave the body and merge with God. Earlier I was scared of death and would avoid going to funerals or condolence meets however when death came knocking for my own parents, I had but to realise the fact that there is no escape. In India or elsewhere across globe, one who stands with you in the hour of grief is your best friend.

      Thank you so much Rajesh. It truly is difficult for most of us to think about death and uncomfortable to go to the funeral homes or condolence meets. It is when we ourselves go through this loss that we come to appreciate those who take the time to come and be with us. I definitely appreciate your comments. 🙂
