Old, Grey and Blank

Stillness, silence fills each day

For many people alone and grey

Elderly she has become

Abandoned, left to live alone

Oh dear family can’t you see

Forgotten in the nursing home

Elderly-Persoon-Alone-In-A-Nursing-Home

He watches, waits for them to come

Family, friends, just anyone

To give a hug, a kiss, a smile

Please come and be with me a while

Why have you left me,  why am I here

I gave you my all and you won’t come near

She loved and cared for you for years

He sacrificed, he paid with tears

Why do they leave us so lonely and sad

Now our lives so blank, no laughter, no love

Someday will it be you,  Lord help from above

It might be you waiting by that door

For a loved one to come, will they visit no more

Their pain is real, on you they depend

Dear God let them know

They are loved till the end.

    I worked in a Nursing home when I was a teenager. It opened my eyes, and crushed my heart. These elderly folks sitting day after day, some getting visitors, others not. I would go in on m day off just to spend time with some of them. Great post!

    i was happy yet sad to read your take on the prompt, happy that you chose to write so elegantly on a topic most people overlook, no one wants to really know about sickness or getting old and yet when i read your words i feel comforted that there are people like you who still see the value of our older family members. i once overheard an old lady say, that she brought up 8 children and yet now not one of them can take care of her now and just pay for the most expensive nursing home or hospital but never visit her, thats the part that makes me sad, sad for all these long forgotten people who have stories we can listen to and learn so much from and yet are left forgotten on their own. thank you for honoring them in your lovely post that i read this morning Patricia……blessings on you always….Gina

      Thank you Gina! It makes me sad too when I think of all the lonely elderly people in nursing homes. I did my clinical nursing time in nursing homes and saw this and also had relatives stay in them. Please keep sharing your thoughts. from Pat

    I have done many hours of volunteer work at homes for the elderly. This poem is sad but true, hopefully someone reads this and it hits home to them and they go and see their loved one! Just one person touched by this would make a difference! Beautifully written!
